FreeLens alternative

When FreeLens is fine — and when something else fits better

FreeLens is the honest “keep the Lens UX, stay free / MIT” path for many teams leaving Lens Desktop or unmaintained OpenLens builds. KubeSpade is a different bet: an independent Kubernetes GUI with no vendor account, credentials on your device, and workflows that are not built on the Lens extension model.

Searches for freelens alternative or freelens vs usually mean one of two things: you want the closest Lens-like desktop, or you tried FreeLens and still want a smaller independent client. Both are valid. This page is for the second case — and for honest comparison so you do not get sold a fork as a “new product.”

KubeSpade runs on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows (x64 and ARM), and Linux (.deb and AppImage). Connect with kubeconfig, Amazon EKS, Google GKE, or Azure AKS. Credentials stay on your device. There is no KubeSpade cloud that receives your tokens.

Coming from OpenLens specifically? See the OpenLens alternative page. From Mirantis Lens Desktop? See Lens alternative.

Stay on FreeLens if…

FreeLens is a strong answer for that job. KubeSpade is not trying to out-FreeLens FreeLens on extension compatibility.

Is KubeSpade a drop-in FreeLens replacement?

For browsing clusters, logs, YAML, exec, Helm, and Desktop pod Files — that is the daily job. It is not a drop-in for Lens extensions or an identical Lens layout. Expect a different UI, not a re-skinned FreeLens.

Should I try FreeLens before KubeSpade?

Yes, if your main goal is “the same Lens UX without Mirantis.” Try KubeSpade if you already know you want an independent client, or FreeLens is not what you are looking for after a short trial.

Do I need kubectl installed?

Not for clusters you connect in the app. The desktop client talks to the Kubernetes API itself. You can still use kubectl alongside it for scripts.

Is there a free download?

Yes. Desktop builds are on the Download page (GitHub Releases, with SHA256SUMS). Verify the checksum before you install.
